Customer Review :
steel must be 1/4" thick or under. : Lincoln Electric K2471-1 Power Mig 140C
The 140c model is NOT the standard "Lowe's" or "Home Depot" store model Lincoln. Those are the "140T" models and they are NOT AS GOOD AS THE 140c. My review will discuss the 140c model. The difference between the two is that the 140c model is a bit more expensive, but has a "continuous" rheostat voltage control knob. This allows one to find the "sweet spot" for welding certain thicknesses of metal. The 140T model has a "tapped" voltage controller which is inferior.
The 140c can weld 1/4" steel plate no problem. If you know what you're doing and have some experience in welding that is, it is not hard to "tweak" the machine into doing what you want it to do. In fact, I regularly use it to weld 3/8" steel handgun targets. Also, another key point is that one needs a 120v wall outlet that is a minimum of 25amp service. Using a traditional RV 30A outlet with a simple $8.00 plug adapter would work perfectly! However, most people do NOT have a 25A or 30A service outlet at their homes. However, many residential houses all have have 20A service outlets, that will pretty much work for most metal. Only time even the 20A outlets trip the breaker is when you turn the voltage rheostat up to the high range and then your breaker will trip regularly. Especially if you're running an extention cord from the outlet to the machine. I try NOT to using an extension cord. Longer the cord, the increase in resistance, thus decrease in voltage to the machine. Now if one only has a regular 15amp 120v outlet at their house, the welder will work, but not on a "high" setting, therefore it will limit one to welding thinner stuff. Thinner metals do not require the "higher" voltage or wire speed settings that the thick stuff needs. If I recall correctly, Lincoln's owner's manual recommends at least a 25A 110/120v outlet.
Anyway, this Lincoln 140c is THE BEST mig welder on the market for the DIYer at home or on the farm, bar none. You get what you pay for. This machine will last a life time with proper care (...or not, it's a LINCOLN!). If you want a higher duty cycle and be able to weld slightly thicker metal, then you'll need to buy the 180c model which is 240v only. Now Lincoln makes a dual voltage machine that can run on either 120 or 240v by simply using the proper plug it comes with. 240 volts give you more power for thicker metal. If you only need a simple great welder and are limited to the standard 110/120v wall plugs, get the 140c. You will NOT be sorry.
